When typing a custom reply to a voter, you may receive a message notifying you of an Invalid Character. This is because SMS texts cannot receive certain characters.
Some of these characters include:
- Emdash: —
- Curly quotes: " and apostrophes '
- Non-English letters: á
These characters may not be visible if the text has been copied and pasted into TextOut from another source, but will trigger the error message.
To get rid of the error and successfully send your message, find the error in your message and delete the character. Replace the character with a simple character such as a regular dash (-), straight quotes or apostrophes (" or '), and unaccented characters (a)
If you are unable to find and locate the invalid characters, copy and paste into a text editor such as TextEdit (Mac) or NotePad (PC). Alternatively, you can copy and paste back into the TextOut program.
If the error is in the initial outbound message or a prepared recommended reply, please notify your Program Administrator so that they may correct it.
